Dworzec, Lublin Bus Station, Poland
The construction of the station along with the reconstruction of the communication system in its area is the most important component of the Integrated Communication Center for the Lublin Functional Area project, co-financed by EU funds under the Regional Operational Program of the Lublin Voivodeship for 2014-2020. The total value of the project is over PLN 345 million, of which almost PLN 197 million is co-financing from European funds.
Who do we meet - Grzegorz Malec, Director of the Public Transport Authority in Lublin, who manages the new facility, will give a short statement for the recording. The statement will be in Polish and translated into English, with the support from city translator, of our colleague Paulina Wójcik from the Center for International Cooperation.
This station of the future seems to have it all: it’s ecofriendly, the design is stunning and it connects the car and bus transport with the railway station behind. Also, it is not just a station, the whole square belongs to the object, so the area reaches all the way to the listed 19th century train station, because the architects wanted to incorporate the project with the city and link the new building to the old one. It is designed as one of the most sustainable projects in Poland of his kind. Because of this new station, which is, instead of the old one that was 3 kilometers away, in the city center, Lublin expects more tourists.
Dworzec Lublin connects urban, regional and national transport networks and includes 43 stations. The 15.000 to 20.000 daily passengers have the choice between 70 operators, and they are waiting for 30 more. Also, there are around 700 regional drivers, private contractors that drive around Lublin, and 1400 regional. For the bike station there is a special app. Underground there is a P+R and a K+R.
The observatory on the roof will open in April, 2024.
There were many technical solutions concerning the building. A concrete wall (with a map of Lublin engraved) on the eastside gets warm during the day and gives the warmth back during the evening. This wall is part of box-in-box construction, because there are also different temperatures needed for someone who enters and at the cashpoint. Also the luxurious waiting room is inside the warm second box. Heat pumps bring the temperature down in the summer and the solar system on the roof will melt the snow in the winter. On the square, trees are planted, and there is a green wall with sensors behind that monitors the 5.000 plants. So, if a plant dies, it will be taken away and replaced.
Over the tree-shaped pillars that hold the canopy there will be ivy growing, it should take two years to reach the top.
170 cameras hang all around the building. From the beginning, Dworzec has a great support from the police. Everyday there are several interventions needed.
